Linkbait is a popular term among internet marketers. Some say it’s a good thing, some say it’s a bad thing. But the real issue is… do bloggers know how to linkbait?.
What is Linkbait?
Linkbait or linkbaiting is all about writing blog posts that will stir people into action and spur a discussion. As the term implies, an article with a linkbait compels people to link back to your blog or website. With the way discussions are done over the internet right now, they are likely to write about your post on their own websites, or any page online where they can voice an opinion. If your blog post is interesting enough, people cannot help but say something about it on twitter, facebook etc.. A linkbait is an article or a comment that attracts traffic to your blog.
Is it always good to linkbait?
Whether or not linkbait is good depends on how you use it. Good linkbaits are those that interest and provoke your target audience, like something on sex ed on a parenting blog. A bad linkbait is something that puts you in a bad light, like an extremely biased opinion on a controversial topic. But then again, some people will argue that anything that draws attention, whether negative or positive, is good linkbait.
Linkbait Writing 101
There are certain types of articles that naturally attract attention. How-to guides with high value content can wow people. If you’re opinionated, you might want to write a controversial opinion article on a hot topic. Insider tell-alls or “exposure” articles are always effective as linkbaits, but they can have legal repercussions.
If you’re the daring type, you can write inflammatory pieces to grab the attention of thousands, if not millions, of internet goers. Just look at the way tabloids sell their stories.
The only rule of thumb to linkbaiting is this… always be accountable for anything you write about online.
How to Use Links to Receive Link Backs
Link love is one of the most common types of linkbaits. The act of linking to another blogger’s post can also drive traffic to your blog. In addition, there are some blogging platforms that automatically place the link to your “reaction” post under the article you linked to.
A blog or any website you own is a way to communicate with people. Your website will attract a certain audience. For a blog to be popular, you must command the attention of all these people. Being a blogger, you should always write posts that other people can proudly share on other sites. Always think of your audience when writing linkbait articles.
